When he enlisted for the First Reserves (New Zealand Army) in the Hauraki District in the 1st World War, he was a school teacher at Te Whetu Putaruru. Frank left Alice to bring up their children unaided and emigrated to Australia where he apparently prospered in business. After his death his brothers, Harold and Bernard, successfully contested his Will on behalf of his children.
