Her birth was registered by her mother on February 10th 1869 before J W Mackenna, Registrar. By the 1881 census her father has remarried, and Ada now has 2 step brothers and a step sister. Ada and Henry were married "by Certificate", by James Robertson M.A., before Fred H Read, Registrar. Witnesses at the ceremony were John and Amelia Jane Jowsey. Ada's address was 3 Percy Street, St.Pancras and Henry's, 4 Candler Street, Scarborough. Ada taught piano and saved the money earned for the fares to New Zealand. On 2 May 1928 her piano "Chester Forbes, London", valued at £75, was insured against fire with the New Zealand Government State and Accident Insurance Office. She also read tarot cards. Their son Bernard always referred to his parents as the Mater and the Old Dad.
