Notes

New NotesSid and Fred were probably working on the renovations at Wykeham Abbey in

1901. On census night he is at Fred and Fanny's home in Wykeham. He also went

to the USA, leaving Liverpool 22 June 1906 and arriving in Boston 30 June 1906

on the ship "Arabic". Sid was accompanying 34 year old Edmund Bradshaw who was

also a carpenter from Bradford. Both said they were to stay with a 'Friend" J

McLeod of Sumner Terrace, 10 Sumner Street, Dorchester, although both had

originally said they had no address to go to. They had paid for their own

tickets to their final destination, were in good health, not deformed or

crippled and neither were polygamists or anarchists according to the ship's

manifest. Mr Bradshaw had more than $50.00 but Sid only $34.00 - neither had

visited the States before.

We don't know what work they found in America but Keith recalls his

grandfather talking about playing cricket over there. A Sidney Jowsey, birth

date abt 1876, profession carpenter aged 31, departed Boston, Mass., USA, and

arrived at Liverpool on the "Ivernia" 21st November 1907. A Cunard ship, N0.

110643. Just below his name on the manifest were John Eiffi aged 27 & John

JJowett aged 25 both of whom were also carpenters. In 1912 Sid and family

lived at 4 Waverley Terrace,Great Horton,Bfd. He was a member of the

Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers. A Lincoln "unemployment" book suggests

that Sid went there looking for work in 1918. His wife's death certificate

indicates that his last occupation was as a carpenter with the GPO (General

Post Office).
